    More about Pillow art:
These illustrations were often given as gifts to newly wed couples as instruction guides, and emphasized the importance of different positions and techniques.
Chinese art has a long tradition of erotic art beginning roughly in the 10th century and reaching its peak during the late Ming Dynasty (17th century). Since sexual intercourse was considered to be the foundation for a good marriage, and central to mental and physical health, pillow books provided instruction on how to keep a spouse satisfied. The beauty of the act is reflected in the names describing the genitalia ("Golden Lotus", "Open Peony Blossom", "Heavenly Dragon Pillar", "Jade Stalk") and the different positions ("Posture of the Bee Stirring the Honey", and "Posture of the Erring Bird Returning to the Forest"). These are charming intimate scenes in which the couples are depicted in genteelly furnished chambers, with art on the walls, ornately carved beds, and flowering potted plants. The genitalia are not exaggerated, as they are in the shunga of Japan, and the male and female bodies, aside from the genitalia, are drawn with similar physiques.
By the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) cultural attitudes toward sex began to shift, and by the Qing Dynasty (1645 - 1912) conservative attitudes toward sex and its depiction brought by Christian missionaries took over. Many important works of art were destroyed, including all but one copy of the illustrated erotic novel of Li Yu, 'The Carnal Prayer Mat' which is currently at Tokyo University.
